@tantramar That's not quite true. If you have a farm, for instance, and you frequently need to transport a few cows in a trailer, you need a heavy and powerful vehicle. Judging by the looks of American streets, there are lots of farmers in the cities.

Years ago we were on a sidestreet in New York and a fire engine appeared with blaring sirens and its way was blocked by a double-parked car. The fire engine had an enormous rubber fender on its front and we soon saw why. Without a moment's hesitation the fire engine driver shoved the double-parked car along in front of it till it came to a gap in the cars. There it shoved the double-parked car off the road. A man riding shotgun in the fire engine threw a piece of paper out onto the car.
Took a trip to Norway, then came home to an American city.
I went out shopping two weeks after getting home, and noticed I felt very nervous. Couldn't quite place why.
It was the proximity of the cars. Norway has huge swaths of streets that are pedestrian-only. In the US, we have streetside parking. I suddenly realized the low-grade survival scanning for people screwing up interacting with the curb had gotten switched off, and I was feeling it switch back on.
This happens a lot in Oslo too. I would be in favour of a policy to outfit the trams with solid enough bumpers that they could just force their way through and let the car owner deal with the damage.
This is probably not an example where that would be safe though. But there are many cases where pushing through would just inflict scratches and bumps.

I would say rather this is why US cars don’t belong in Europe.
Consider this point: cities that do not allocate infrastructure to cars, save 90% of all the resources needed to make a car centric world possible.
Every city government must be made to understand this. A city without cars largely saves 90% of all the expense for itself and for its residents. Best of all city without cars invests a whole lot more money on businesses and people instead.
In America 🇺🇸 people are highly encouraged to buy large cars as they are safer in car accidents due to the presence of other large cars (smaller cars would get crushed against a larger car apparently).
It’s a weird slippery slope, but the larger cars also consume more energy (gas or electricity) & take up way more space in parking lots.
@darnell Of note, I recently read about another, related externality I had not previously considered: these giant vehicles don't just take up more space when parking, but also much more space on the road, so fewer cars can drive there. Traffic backs up, everything is made worse in every way.
I also respectfully suggest the phrase "arms race" here, as it more accurately describes the underlying idea: a bigger shield, a bigger hammer, escalating violence.

A few weeks ago, we saw a play in San Francisco. Our vehicles (we had two) were small, foldable electric scooters that we "parked" in coat check. After it ended, one of the ushers watched us unfold the scooters & gave us a thumbs up - it took ~15 seconds.. Then we rode to the train station, folded the scooters, and got on a train for the trip home.

did the owner pay the taxis for the people who couldn't get on with the streetcar? Because that's what they do in Germany with people who park their cars in the streetcar's way. All the people who are blocked in the streetcar get a taxi and the fares are billed to the guy (let's face it, it's always a man) who parked the car. As well as a fine and the cost for removing the car. And all of that money is payable before he can retrieve his car from the collection point.

Google added some restrictions to news app and I don’t see how Flym (and other RSS aggregators) could comply to that. For instance, Flym cannot provide a “valid and verifiable contact information” for the feed, nor it can assure that “each of the sources must meet News policy requirements”.
As of today, Flym updates on Play Store are blocked by Google. So I have archived this project in order to clearly show that I won’t maintain it anymore. I’m not aware of any official way of publishing an RSS client on PlayStore and do not have motivation to argue with Google.

Ich war dieses Jahr in den USA (Beruflich, nicht touristisch) und zum ersten mal hatte ich dort ein beklemmendes Gefühl. Die Stimmung war seltsam aufgeladen, die Leute hatten oftmals sehr starke Meinungen und generell spürte man eine Art Frustration und Spaltung. Das hatte in der Schlange der Immigration in Denver bereits angefangen 😓
Es gibt zurzeit keine offiziellen Zahlen, aber eine Gallup-Umfrage ergab, dass etwa 16% der US-Amerikaner angaben ins Ausland ziehen zu wollen. Besonders hoch war dieser Wunsch bei jungen Frauen unter 30, von denen 40% einer Auswanderung in Betracht ziehen.
Ah, keine Sorge. Das ist nur ein kurzer Ausschlag. Die Werte normalisieren sich schnell wieder. Die Stimmung normalisiert sich schnell wieder. AFD ist schon normal. Trump und Co, bzw. die vielen neuen Autokratien werden sich auch bald als 'normal' anfühlen. Merz und Co werden uns da sicher etwas Nachhilfe geben. Einfach weiter gehen ... alles #neunormal.
Mich hats auch vorher schon nicht dort hingezogen. War im meinem Leben einmal als Tourist und einmal beruflich dort. War beides mal enttäuschenden. Das Land hat wunderschöne Orte, ohne Zweifel. Für mich war die USA als Reiseland schon vor Trump ein NoGo. Auch da musste man schon befürchten, am Flughafen seine elektronischen Geräte "zur Überprüfung" aus den Händen geben zu müssen oder intimste persönliche Informationen und Passwörter preiszugeben. Kritik im Internet über die USA oder die ein arabisches Aussehen/Name reichte dafür aus. Man sollte nicht so tun, als hätte Trump die Feindseligkeit, Massenüberwachung und Rassismus grad erfunden. Den meisten war es einfach egal.

I'm not self-hosting on a Raspberry Pi or old computer, but rather via a VPS.
They automatically do weekly backups for me. For the VPS hosting 3 Fediverse profiles (GoToSocial, Friendica, Pixelfed) I am even paying 2.99 a month for daily backups. Hostinger (the Lithuania-based company of my 2 VPSs) has servers in different countries to ensure backup security.
My offline system is for all the other stuff: docs, photos and videos. At my in-laws' & my parents' 🤗

I went out shopping two weeks after getting home, and noticed I felt very nervous. Couldn't quite place why.
It was the proximity of the cars. Norway has huge swaths of streets that are pedestrian-only. In the US, we have streetside parking. I suddenly realized the low-grade survival scanning for people screwing up interacting with the curb had gotten switched off, and I was feeling it switch back on.

This is probably not an example where that would be safe though. But there are many cases where pushing through would just inflict scratches and bumps.

Consider this point: cities that do not allocate infrastructure to cars, save 90% of all the resources needed to make a car centric world possible.
Every city government must be made to understand this. A city without cars largely saves 90% of all the expense for itself and for its residents. Best of all city without cars invests a whole lot more money on businesses and people instead.

It’s a weird slippery slope, but the larger cars also consume more energy (gas or electricity) & take up way more space in parking lots.

Of note, I recently read about another, related externality I had not previously considered: these giant vehicles don't just take up more space when parking, but also much more space on the road, so fewer cars can drive there. Traffic backs up, everything is made worse in every way.
I also respectfully suggest the phrase "arms race" here, as it more accurately describes the underlying idea: a bigger shield, a bigger hammer, escalating violence.

A few weeks ago, we saw a play in San Francisco. Our vehicles (we had two) were small, foldable electric scooters that we "parked" in coat check. After it ended, one of the ushers watched us unfold the scooters & gave us a thumbs up - it took ~15 seconds.. Then we rode to the train station, folded the scooters, and got on a train for the trip home.
