I really appreciate you making your stances on "generative" AI clear and being so loud and proud about it. You really inspire me, David, in that regard especially. With the news about Lutris (a game launcher I used up until this week) beginning to use and intentionally obfuscate "generated" code, as well as becoming aware of some Linux kernel devs rubbing shoulders with AI slop themselves, this puts a smile on my face.

It also says i disapprove it, but it has a nuance for the computer science and FLOSS projects who use the technics (not with any proprietary AI of course, crawled on data without consent), with just their in-house models trained on small in house ethical datasets, for statistic, scientific research or image algorythm (eg. Filters, Sharpenîng, img search local). Sorry for not being in absolute purity and have a nuance. I' m like that on many topics.

There's absolutely no such thing as ethical Gen AI. I'm not talking about types of machine learning that existed before 2022. That's not Gen AI. I'm talking about *generative* "AI."
And there's no such thing as "ethical" Gen AI, nor "it'll get better in the future!" Even your "what if it's just local, on device!" is a bullshit excuse.
Gen AI is inherently fascist.
Gen AI is inherently brainwashing and mindwarping.
The massive environmental destruction and training off off massive amounts of people's creations without permission isn't the only problem with Gen AI.

I'm just talking about the coding method, the small neural networks home made for Character Recognition for scanner, built on a limited dataset of scans (with autorisation); or a filter that auto clean line-art, like on this paper davidrevoy.com/article642/scie… I participated in 2018. Yes, things that existed before 2022.
I think we agree on all gen AI from surveillance capitalism by corpo. No need to jump on the big words or insults.
Also, I concede my wording on my FAQ (that's probably was written around 2022/2023) could be better and more precise. I'll note on my TODO to try to disambiguate this as much as possible.

David, the conflation of working, innocuous computational methods such as what you describe here with the exploitive and theft-based methods of the last few years was intentional.
The use of this conflation to illicit otherwise well-meaning individuals to equivocate over "good" and "bad" AI is a well-known tactic for bogging down criticism.
It's not exactly just two people having a difference in definitions.

Are you worried someone reading post-2023 is going to somehow think you're referring to some predictive algorithm in use in hospitals 2016?

Clearly what we're against is AI slop and blatant plagiarizing of artists' works. (Not to mention massive data centers poisoning the land, but that's a different topic)

I'm very frustrated and concerned about AI – not because it will "take over the world" or some conspiracy like that, but because it's going down the same path as blockchain and other technologies regarding cryptocurrency, tokens, etc.
It's a good and interesting technology, but the problem is that it's used as a marketing term and for all kinds of "bullsh*" which ruins the reputation of the technology as a whole and burns everyone in the process.
(The Em dash is not there because I used AI, but because I'm trying uncommon and almost "dead" but useful text elements like the semi-cologne ; for example, while keeping things language accurate)

@mangeurdenuage Cette présentation n'apporte rien de concret dans les usages pratique: juste un objet théorique avec des critères pas mis en application... la FSF quoi.
J'invoque avec ce genre de règle catégorique et simple une protection contre des usages déjà là. Ca donne au projet un motif de ban ou d'avertissement pour bannir les MR d'un agent Claude/Copilot/Mistral/Llama à vue, ou gronder un bleu qui penserait qu'on pourrait vibe-coder un truc pour le site et le soumettre.

C'est sur que depuis qu'ils ont perdue les 5million de donations tout les projets comme RYF la retro ingénierie du matos etc... qui avait exploser en 2014/2015 et bien on a plus grand chose en dehors de pouvoir maintenir le projet GNU.
Mais j'ai creuser ce sujet sur les années et c'est maintenant évidant que tout cela fut organiser via des agence de communication pour manipuler la foule via twatteur par exemple, pour écraser le cœur du mouvement du logiciel, peut importe le résultat, si la FSF ne perdait pas l'argent ils perdaient les gens avec l’éthique nécessaire/incorruptibilité, de la bonne direction du projet et ce serait transformer en OSI avec le temps.
Sans l'argent, et bien il y a toujours une petite chance mais faut qu'il y ai suffisamment de personne qui reviennent a se reconnecter avec leur cœur (je cite pas la FSF mais la cnv X) ).

M'enfin, bref ce que je souhaiter souligner c'était que la FSF avés établie que pour que le ML soit étique comme établie pour la liberté informatique/logiciels que non seulement il faut que le logiciels soit sous licence GPL mais que les données annexe qui ne sont pas du code qui on servie a sa configuration/entraînement etc... soit aussi sous une licence copyleft.
Ce sont des lignes directrice on connaît déjà le résultats lorsqu'on les suits pas et ça s’appelle l'OSI.

J'ai rien contre ce sont après tout ce sont des logiciels/SaaSS propriétaire qui ne devrait pas exister, mais comme dit pour les quelque projets de machine learning qui sont eux éthique (3) ils peuvent plus utiliser votre travaille comme matériels et c'est dommage dans leur cas.

@knees Yes! Feel free to steal the idea and the graphics for it, no need attribution for that!
Just, also check the html and css code: it was painful to adapt it so 'read-out-loud' assistant for accessibility don't read it and same for Firefox 'text only' mode, but I found workarounds. You might want them too.
Also: it works, the crawler of a famous search engine took it, so it might be soon also part of dataset for training AI.

Speedpainting duration is always relative to any artist. Here I call speedpaintings the one I do in only one sitting, this one took ~2h. (I usually paint more than 9h on my pieces)
I had a little time at 17h30, a pinch to the heart seeing other celebrating the death anniversary of Terry Pratchett, and wanted to participate with a little something.
With this time budget, I couldn't detail much anything, but captured what I had in mind during my reading experience.

11 years already, huh? Back then when I was 20 I read all of Discworld in under a year. And then Pterry died. What did I cry then! Now I am reading the books to my child, just now came back from reading Soul Music until he sleeps. And so things live one. First through us, now through our children. So now I am crying again. He wrote "No one is finally dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away". Pterry has not caused ripples, but giant waves. Let my tears make sure the waves never calm down.
Also been thinking this for a long while, but I think you'd be perfect for illustrating Tiffany Aching series. Like Paul Kidby is great and beloved, but Tiffany Aching expresses strength, and your drawing is really good at exrpressing strength. I am sure he would have loved your illustrations.

Mir ist ja in erster Linie schon immer schleierhaft, warum Menschen *freiwillig* Outlook als Mail Client *wollen*. 🤷🏻♂️

@koehntopp an meiner Schule wird man zu Outlook gezwungen. Du kannst kein anders E-mailprogramm verwenden.
Gerne auch ergänzen, dass das auch bei der Mobilen Version so ist UND das die Zugangsdaten klartext und unverschlüsselt übertragen werden.
Und dann noch, dank Cloud Act haben damit auch die US Strafbehörden jederzeit zugriff auf diese Login Daten und damit auf euren Mailpostfach.
(Und es reicht nicht nur Outlook zu löschen ihr müsst auch hinterher das Kennwort ändern)

Hey everybody. I found this interesting. It's likely not a game changer for anyone, but "hardware" watchdogs in Proxmox was a new one for me, and was a cheap and easy, hacky fix to deal with a low value VM that was periodically hanging. This is a nice tool to add to the belt, hope you all enjoy!

Other actions are possible with watchdog timers, especially with hypervisors. They can invoke a script or use an agent to kill a misbehaving process.
Ultimately, the best solution is not to need the timers at all, so finding the culprit within the client is ideal, though not always possible.
VMs hanging on memory often have incorrect caching policies, you may want to investigate that.
You're absolutely right! I'd point you back to my notion of cost-benefit analysis. Anything more than the 20min that I've spent on analysis so far isn't worth my time. If the VM falls over permanently, that was a risk and my time savings has already been worth that risk. If I were looking at something like a production file server or domain controller, sure -- I'd spend more time on it. Likely though, I'd just have engineered it better in the first place. Not every problem warrants a high precision solution. 🙂
This won't help my old ass mFi/mongodb VM but it looks very useful for other shit. Ty!

I have some LED light strips i want to convert to being smart.
The current controller gets 230V AC in and outputs (according to the label) 21V DC 135mA +-5%. It has two channels, one for CW, one for WW LEDs (three pins, not sure yet if common positive or common negative).
My home automation is Home Assistant, the new controller should be Zigbee or Wifi.
What do i buy?

I've been loving these little 4-packs of tp-link "Tapo" smart plugs. Not expensive, work out-of-the-box with Apple Home (probably supported by Home Assistant too), without any app needed.

@flangey I've looked into that, but that requires an external power supply, and doesn't seem to (nicely) integrate CW/WW colour temp controls (sure, i could just independently control both, but where's the fun in that)

My local blood bank has currently blocked me because my medication (Ozempic) would represent a risk. When I asked "Which risk?" they couldn't give me one.
Other blood banks would accept me, but are out of reach.
@masek it's interesting - seems like some English language countries accept donations when using ozempic, but for example the Netherlands don't sanquin.nl/veelgestelde-vragen…
There are several measure points for evaluating medications. Ozempic doesn't trigger any of the typical criteria used to determine risk for blood donations.
I asked them point blank: What kind of risk do you see?
And the answer practically was: You would not understand it anyway.
Once per year I ask them to reconsider and include a list of German blood banks that accept blood donations while on Ozempic.
The funny thing is: I am now a much healthier person than the one they accepted blood donations before.
the Dutch explanation is "Dit uitstel is vanwege mogelijke schade voor de ongeboren vrucht van de patiënt die bloed of plasma krijgt." So their argument is possible damage to a fetus.
But it's of course super annoying that yiur blood bank does not explain their reasons.

You link mentions as reason a possible teratogenic effect.
A systematic review published in late 2025 covering five studies with a total of 1,128 semaglutide-exposed pregnancies found mixed results, but concluded that current evidence does not indicate a consistent increased risk of major congenital malformations associated with semaglutide exposure.

And then we need to take into account, that the study was done with women who continuously take semaglutide during pregnancies. So the study was done with a dose several orders of magnitude higher than that of a blood donation from a person with that medication.
The risk evaluation is totally off as "not receiving a blood donation" carries a thousand times the penalty. And they still send me push notification to come donating blood as they risk running dry 🙂.
P.S. If they would check for alcohol in the system (which has a a proven negative effect) they would lose a significant portion of their current donors.
I understand your point but also neither you nor I are medical doctors 😊 I do, however know, that the Dutch tend to err on the side of "good for population effects, even if bad for individual cases", see the bike helmet approach.

I am not Dutch, but I only started wearing a helmet several years ago, when I realised that sometimes I like to ride bicycle too fast and might lose control or hit someone if not paying attention properly. It turned out, bike helmets are perfect head cover for rainy days (of which we have far too many in Northern Germany), so now it's my standard accessoire.
Compulsory helmets would be devastating, I absolutely agree.
@ditol @masek der Unterschied ist halt, dass Fahrradhelme hier, in Gegenteil zu Deutschland auch freiwillig auf keinste Art und Weise gepusht werden. Es ist sogar verdammt schwer, überhaupt einen (guten) Helm zu finden. In Deutschland ist Helm nach meiner Erfahrung normal, auch in der Stadt; hier erkennen sie deutsche Touristen drab, dass sie einen haben.
Ja, das habe ich gehört. Habe mir auch gleich gedacht, dass ich mein Käppi nicht vergessen darf, wenn ich mal in die Niederlande verreise. :)
Und diese ständige Helmnotwendigkeit im öffentlichen Diskurs ist ein Unding. Man lernt schließlich in der Fahrschule, dass man vorausschauend und rücksichtsvoll zu fahren hat. Da sollte die Gefahr für Leute zu Fuß und hoch zu Drahtesel schön minimal sein. Ist mir immer noch unerklärlich, wie die Leute das vergessen, sobald sie den Führerschein in der Hand halten. Aber das ist eine ganz andere Diskussion.
Jedenfalls danke für diese Logik hinter der Helmfreiheit in NL, war mir nicht bekannt. Ich dachte, die sind einfach entspannt. (Was bestimmt auch zutrifft.)

And the reason I post about donating is rather simple: I long procrastinated on starting to. And then folks I followed on twitter kept posting about them going donating so that at a point I made the jump. So trying to give back into the circle of encouragement...
do you get free biscuits and snacks afterwards? We do in the UK 🙂
@Edent yes! They actually encourage you to drink and eat something afterwards. And it's really nice Dutch bisquits, raisin bread or nuts at my location. You can also get a "soup in a cup" and similar, though I usually go for the sweet stuff 😅

Look, at the place I was donating blood in the city I used to live we would get 25€ for additional food expenses due to the blood loss. Back in the days me and friends would spend the money at a local restaurant. Compared to that, some pasta with tomato sauce is... you get the point: I didn't know, how good I had it. ;)

I agree, but 25€ once every 2 or 3 months wasn't enough to be considered proper money even in my uni years. It really felt like reimbursement and they did their best to explain it like this. But I guess, with the recent cuts to the welfare state we may end up in a situation, where 25€ every couple of months DOES feel like proper money to many people...

I feel lucky that I have highly visible veins in both arms so I simply tell them to use whichever is more convenient.
I made my first donation back when I turned 18 in 2006, so this year is the twentieth anniversary, I suppose... it's always good to see more people join.

I would love to donate--was giving pretty regularly. But my blood iron has been too low lately and it's not rebounded enough just yet. But I think giving blood is one of the easiest ways to do something good in the world.
@onorio hope the blood irons gets up again - not just for donating, low blood iron is really not letting one feel well 😵💫
And yes on the super easy way to help! And it's worth trying. I always thought I'd be the person to faint etc., but my body surprisingly almost does not care, the only difference I feel is the lower performance when running after, but not that different from going to the mountains!
Yeah it honestly annoys me more than anything else; I want to be able to help out but until/unless my blood iron improves I'm stuck watching on the sidelines.
I've had a similar experience as a late donor @vicgrinberg. Started in my forties because they do bi-annual campaigns at my workplace.
Only donated 3 times so far. The last time flow stopped and they started wiggling the needle. Then I almost past out...
Now I'm scared to go back and having the same thing happen again. They took great care of me though and in the end it wasn't so bad. I just get queezy thinking about it 😞

@dacmot oh noes, sorry for the experience! Passing out was the biggest fear that stopped me from trying to donate in the first place, so I totally understand being hesitant now 💚
I'm always letting work-chat know when I'm of donating. People are happy and everything, but so far nobody got curious enough to ask for details or consider going themselves.

Don't they check the vein by touching it? They do with me at least every time, although they clearly see it.
@ditol they do! But one of them is pretty much invisible by eye alone and comparatively far away from the worse than that is visible - at least that's what they told me 😅

The only weird experience I had with them was during my intake. They wanted to know why I wanted to donate blood. "Don't know, seems like a good idea" was apparently not good enough 
I used donate plasma in Australia, but they won't allow me here in Singapore.
@skribe sorry about that, ut sucks 😩 (I don't think plasma would work for me given that already for blood they are on the verge with my vein size - and I don't quiet have the time to go to the donation centre that often... So lots of respect for folks who do!)

I used to donate regularly, marked it in my small book, and turned up like clockwork. But sadly I was in englandshire in the Eighties, and now I'm not even allowed to donate for research.
@uc in Oz, they give you a card and a keyring, with your blood group on it. I still carry mine.
No keyring given out here. But the cake is usually good. That's the bit I miss most.

@virbonus I'm in absolute awe of folks who donate in spite of being afraid of needles! I'm lucky enough to not be to...
Too much honor. I'm just deeply uncomfortable / bordering on afraid, but still well below the phobia level and can usually handle needed needles quite well. But it still drives the blood pressure, possibly barring me from donating. Thankfully they let me pass usually, sometimes measuring three times while telling jokes to relax me😍.

@doro ich reise so viel, dass es bei mir auch selten öfters wird (und nachdem mein Eisen mal abgesackt ist, habe ich beschlossen, dass Eisentabletten schon Ok sind für mich, weil ich als Flexitarierin eher seeehr wenig Fleisch esse...). Aber jedes mal hingehen, egal wie oft, ist es ja trotzdem wert!

@doro ah, gut zu wissen! Ich komme mir damit ein bisschen komisch vor, weil die Niederländer das nicht empfehlen bzw. explizit sagen unnötig, aber mit den reinen Essensempfehlungen komme ich nicht zurecht...

Last time I went I forgot to drink anything, and donated in a less than well-hydrated state. I felt like I needed to squeeze it out of my arm like the sponge in your hand. 😆
@geckzilla oh noes, this does not sound fun! I'm "lucky" that my body really complained when I'm not drinking enough (aka headaches from hell...), so I've not had that particular problem so far 😅
I’m O positive and donate double reds. Unfortunately since the Red Cross started using the thumb ring to test iron levels, my partner keeps failing the test much to her annoyance. She rarely failed the old finger prick test.
