Es geht so langsam in Richtung "Ausweispflicht im Internet" (auch für Instanzen ohne .de-Adresse und Hosting im Ausland per Geoblocking) und ich denke, dass die großen Fediverse-Instanzen darauf sowohl technisch als auch personell nicht vorbereitet sind und viele der User*innen ebendieser Instanzen auch keinen größeren Bedarf an einer freiwilligen Mitwirkung haben werden.
Das wäre ein Grund für allgemeines Fediverse-Selfhosting mit individuellen 1-Personen-Instanzen, welche eben nicht über einen Anbieterzwang reguliert werden können, da sie halt keine Anbieter sind. Unter anderem brauche ich aus diesem Grund hier auch kein Impressum.
Im Idealfall läuft so eine leichtgewichtige Mikro-Instanz auf einem SBC, nem Nano-PC oder eventuell sogar gebrauchtem Smartphone? Zugänglich sollte die Geschichte sein - also am besten "$enduser steckt das Ding an den heimischen Router und gut is"; dann sollte sich die Kiste mit einem freien Subdomainservice oä verbinden, sodass eine dauerhafte Erreichbarkeit gewährleistet ist und $enduser sich dann nur noch einen $usernamen ausdenken muss. Updates im Idealfall selbsttätig oder zumindest mit geringstmöglichem Aufwand für $enduser; wie bspw bei einem Android-Update.
Hat wer Lust sich (ohne Zeitdruck) gemeinsam mit mir dazu etwas zu überlegen und umzusetzen? Ich bin relativ kacke im Programmieren, habe aber ein Händchen für Hardware-Hacking & Produktdesign. Bin auf jeden Fall auf dem c3 zugegen.

Ich denke dafür sollten wir aber federation von posts noch etwas besser lösen. Bisher ist das echt painful, ich habe so oft posts die ich nicht sehe weil $instanz dss noch nicht mit meiner föderiert hat.
Aber ich denke man sollte sogar sowas für Mail machen. Mail, weil a) kritischer auth schnittpunkt und b) kann man im Gegensatz zu anderen Dingern nicht E2EE Cloud-hosten. Mail ist für mich eigentlich das wichtigste für self-host.
Ich stelle mir da vor, dass man $ISP dazu überreden sollte einen slightly besseren home-router anzubieten, auf dem läuft dann stalwart. Inklusive ist auch eine Domain + ein 1EUR IPv4 Relay + DNS + encrypted mailbox cloud backup.
MX Records der Kunden zeigen auf den Relay from ISP der anhand von SAN-matching bzw. SMTP host matching herausfindet, an welchen router er die Anfrage weiterleiten soll – TLS wird aber im Router terminiert. Der Stalwart darin ist ordentlich vorkonfiguriert und es läuft auch ein simples Webinterface, alles per auto-update natürlich.
Das Produkt nennt man dann Internet "Souveränitätsbox".
Früher hat man ja auch bei der Telekom 'ne Mail bekommen. Warum nicht wieder, aber mit selfhost?

Quasi so ein out of the box Kasten. Eine minimale Hardware, auf dem die Software schon vorinstalliert ist. Die hänge ich einfach in mein Netzwerk. Per Webinterface gehe ich drauf und komme automatisch zur Ersteinrichtung. Da vergebe ich dann auch unter anderem meinen Nutzernamen. Kann noch so Dinge setzten wie Hostname und feste IP oder so.
Und das war es dann. Läuft einfach und fertig.
Oder verstehe ich das falsch?
Über so was denke ich auch oft nach, gerne mal gemeinsam! ☺️

1) Genau, aktuell verwende ich beide Apps halbherzig und ohne erkennbares Muster. Ganz klares selbstverschuldetes Problem. 🙃
2) In beiden Apps habe ich bisher versucht, eine gewisse Struktur und Links zwischen diversen Einträgen einzupflegen. ist mir aber noch nicht gelungen. Ich vermute (!), dass ich das in einem klassischen Wiki besser hinbekommen würde.
Sowohl bei Joplin als auch bei Anytype ist zusätzlich eine installation auf jedem betroffenen Endgerät und eine Kontrolle der Synchronisation notwendig. Das würde bei einem zentral gehosteten Wiki entfallen.
Vor knapp drei Wochen habe ich mir ein Fitbit Air zugelegt, da ich meine Vitalwerte endlich wieder aufzeichnen wollte.
Eine Zeit lang habe ich dazu meine Garmin Instinct 3 verwendet, diese trage ich aktuell aber nur noch beim Sport. Der Daily Rocker ist seit einem halben Jahr eine Casio Square und ich bin guter Hoffnung, dass ich meine Flipperitis bezüglich Armbanduhren endlich überwunden habe.
Zurück zum Thema Fitbit und dem damit verbundenen Zwang, ein Googlekonto verwenden zu müssen, denn ohne dieses lässt sich die Health-App nicht nutzen.
Schon vor dem Kauf des Fitbit hatte ich Bauchschmerzen bei dem Gedanken, meine Daten bei Big G hochzuladen. Aber Alternativen wie Garmin Cirqa etc. sind in der Hinsicht nicht besser und bei aller Sympathie für GadgetBridge: die FOSS-App ist genial, bietet meiner Meinung nach aber (noch) nicht die Analysemöglichkeiten der kommerziellen Lösungen.
Also habe ich ein pseudonymes Googlekonto angelegt, welches bis heute einwandfrei funktioniert hat. Die App läuft sandboxed auf meinem GrapheneOS-Pixel und kriegt keine nicht für sie bestimmte Daten zu sehen.
Wie schon geschrieben: bis heute. Denn plötzlich ließ sich Health nicht mehr öffnen und verlangte eine erneute Anmeldung, welche mit oben abgebildeter Meldung scheiterte. WTF?
Nein, es war kein Bot bei der Erstellung des Kontos beteiligt und das einzige Programm war ein Browser. Nun bin ich mal gespannt, was mein Einspruch ergibt. Ohne funktionierenden Googleaccount ist das Armband nutzlose Deko, und eine recht teure noch dazu.

They then clarified they were asking me to use AI to do the install. They thought using AI would somehow make the vanilla WordPress setup better. They were fine with it taking longer, even, if I somehow involved AI in the process they had already offloaded to me.

I work full time in IT and it is rare that I get asked to do after hours work on the side. Rates depends on what they ask, but it starts at $50 an hour Canadian and a minimum of four hours.
I think folks really have a lack of value for our profession because it's "computer skills".
It's the same attitude as "oh it's just plumbing" and before you know it you're knee deep in dirty water.
No matter how desperate we are for money, we must value our time. And like just get a plumber in.

@onepict Many of the problems customers have are related to lack of (small) investment in hardware or proper planning. The most difficult part is making them understand that they'll pay it, sooner or later, with interest and a lot of wasted time.
Luckily, many understand it and plan accordingly.
@onepict I don't know if corporate law is same in mainland Europe as UK, but there's a lot of "serial entrepreneurs" around who will simply let their business burn and walk away from all the creditors (using limited liability as a way of avoiding personal consequences) rather than do things properly or hire the right people.
And its not just in tech but across the board, to the point I do full audits on any suppliers I deal with, checking Companies House and all sorts (including any personal info I can find out about the directors)
AI is going to unearth way more of these, albeit with quite a bit of collateral damage along the line..
One of the things I could never understand is running a business you really don't understand or don't care about.
I do the job I love, and I have a tiny company because I want to be the boss of myself and suggest my customers the solutions I believe in.
Running an IT company only for making money and for a short period of time sounds, to me, quite bad.
@onepict in Britain a lot of them don't start off bad or dishonest, but are so focused on constant growth they take on more work than they can support.
I've seen it with online services (we've been through 4 different care planning systems at work in 20 years because the small companies making them burned out), same with SMEs selling VOIP hardware (I seem to need a new one each time), also see this with automotive stuff (the place I got my last car from enshittified itself chasing after larger sales volumes and it was already creaking at the seams when I bought the car), and places like Amazon end up winning more business as for all their faults they do deliver stuff on time on more occasions..
So they're happy to burn €500 and get the wrong answer, but they bulk at paying that much to get (an almost certainly) correct answer and fix?
"Whatdaya mean it'll cost €3000 to fix my car? The €1600 sledgehammer the AI told me to use was much cheaper and it took the engine out in seconds, now you want to replace it and charge me more?! Why are you ripping me off? I just want my car to work!"
I just can't with people.
Same scenario when people hire unskilled folks to do a kitchen remodel, based on their low quote. After it is finished and they are unhappy with products and teh sink leaks they call in a skilled tradesperson and cry when they are quoited another 50-60% to FIX the crappy work and installations!

Thankfully there's a new one that's promising to be much more lucrative, if entirely more stressful. Either that or societal collapse when people refuse to admit they were wrong to give spicy auto-complete admin access to things.

The stupid here is SO deep. "IT" didn't make backups (and neither had they)? They didn't update the server for years? And (implied) they had no one actually competent managing their IT?
Reminds me of the old PC support joke that ends with "return it to the store and tell them you're too stupid to own a computer."
Sounds like they paid 500 euros for a few valuable life lessons, if they actually paid attention:
1) have tested backups. This is important even if you aren't changing things, but especially if you are.
2) human experts aren't cheap, but they're often cheaper than the alternative.
3) the AI cannot take responsibility, and has no culpability, and is often wrong. Act accordingly.

I say this all the time “you don’t know what you don’t know”. No LLM will proactively warn you about issues you don’t know about and no LLM will fill in the gaps of your knowledge for you.
It does what you ask it to do, so its context is your knowledge, not the other way around.
I don't get this attitude for anything broken. Once I realize something will be a complicated fix, I immediately think that paying a professional is the cheapest solution. My computer, the plumbing, the roof, my taxes. If I know I could dig myself a deeper hole on my own, I give it to someone who won't.
Some people were never taught "penny wise, pound foolish" when growing up.
F-yeah. Nice response. The amount of resentment toward people with IT skill is palpable. “You want to charge me for help with a free web page builder?”. “You’re charging me more than the device cost!”.

I don't know, feels like the +500 is punishment for reaching to AI instead of a person, and you chose that instead as a teaching moment of "don't trust AIs ever again".
I know lots of non computering people who use AI for one reason or another, and I don't scold them, but I take every opportunity to try to teach them. Last Sunday I explained some issues about AI data centers, and the people honestly didn't know. The one that asked most questions said themselves were "a total ignorant".
no punishment at all. If you call me and say "I need to upgrade my server", it's one thing. If you call me and say "my server isn't working, not booting anymore, I do not have any backups, I don't know what happens", I need to investigate first.
I'm not punishing anyone, but you can't expect to call me and fix it in 10 minutes, offering a coffee as a payment.
yeah, maybe... TBH I don't do freelancing; I have done some in the past, but not as my main income. OTOH, I once recovered a partition table for free (I even wrote about it; it's part of my CV :) because it was interesting to do, I knew the person, and their PhD depended on it. I never took into account if it was their fault or not (it wasn't).
But again, not my breadwinner. And you seem fine with not taking jobs.
@mdione I don't like losing jobs, actually. But from the tone of the conversation, the situation itself, and my experience, I had the feeling this wasn't going to be just a job. It was going to be a responsibility I didn't want to take on.
I've learned to recognise situations that can easily turn into "We tried everything, then called a professional, and even he couldn't fix it."
The €500 spent on AI tokens are already gone, and that's apparently fine. But if I spend hours investigating and can't recover the server, suddenly my time becomes something to argue about. And if I fix it in ten minutes? "Why should we pay so much? It only took you ten minutes!"
I've seen this kind of situation before. And while I genuinely enjoy helping people, sometimes even for free, I've also learned when it's better to walk away.
It's not something I enjoy doing. But sometimes avoiding trouble is worth more than getting another job. 😉
there’s the “I enjoy doing it”-rate, the regular rate, the “I dont enjoy doing it” rate and the “I really don’t want to do it” rate.
Troubleshooting an unknown mess created by a clueless person falls in one of the latter categories for me.

I admit I check more rigurously on my Art posts. Those I really check these days.
Sometimes after 30 minutes I'll come to the conclusion it's AI or probably AI. The latest thing is pictures which are plausible for a contemporary artist and attributed to them, but not real. And people don't check.
Then there's digital artists like Kaoru Yamada whose work I like, but it's AI assisted and he churns them out ...
So yeah 🤷🏻♀️
That adds to it. You are forced to spend more time just to make sure to stay within your values. 30 minutes are an awful lot of time that these guys take from you and us.
Keep posting no matter what. It still stays as fun that any of us needs to stay healthy.

People running 30 or 40 users on a 486 PC running SCO Unix hooked up to a multi-port serial card.We'd never have tolerated the amount of waiting between actions or screens that is now considered absolutely normal on web-based cloud-hosted applications.
