Good morning Fedi friends!

I know this is not the right place to ask for this but I'm in need of a Jiminy Cricket / voice of reason to talk me out of something I am sooo tempted to do:

1) buy a new domain name (to be fair it would be a good move to secure it, can't explain why till I do)

2) set up my own Sharkey instance with it (no need for this whatsoever except that I'm impossibly smitten with it)... to use this as a private little instance to interact with friends / contacts.

I can't get Sharkey out of my mind, help 😆

maybe I was sort of hoping for encouragement and reinforcement, given the general sentiment over here 😂

LOL 😂

Just buy the domain name, if it’s under 20€. Set a reminder for 11 months from now to check if you still want / need it.

on IONOS it's 1 Euro only but I can't figure out if it includes domain privacy... otherwise on my usual hosting company it's 15 Euros

@Elena Rossini on GoToSocial ⁂ I really like Sharkey and its cousins, but so far they seem to have some problems with apps like Tusky.

That's why I don't run an instance of my own.

So... Go for it! 😁

oh I know but I'm tired of installing subdomains on my TLDs. Their DNS records are absolutely bananas. Plus I really need to get that specific TLD I have in mind...

Hahaha, Sharkey tempts me often ;-)

Do you envision a way to use Sharkey?

More/less integration with Ghost/GoToSocial, or different post for different user public?

Als Antwort auf Leonieke

haha it's so tempting isn't it?

I suppose I want a quieter instance where I just comment on friends' / contacts' posts.

My Mastodon account can get so noisy, with 100+ mentions some days.

I just want a little quiet corner of the fediverse that's a little bit slower, if it makes sense? And Sharkey is so joyous

Sharkey is wonderful!

And yes, I understand the reasoning behind it.

And to keep it private / away from the bulk of the fediverse: good point!

(Go for it! :neocat_shadefingers: )

But why a new domain, why not install it on a subdomain? (This from someone who buys new domains for funny phrases her neighbors say, only to let them lapse after 12 months of non-use)

Als Antwort auf Leonieke

yes yes I completely agree re: domains but this particular one I need to secure (independently of any Sharkey installation), so I thought: cool, I can then immediately use it for Sharkey. If it makes sense? Plus the DNS records for the TLD I own and use for self-hosting are a real headache... because of all the subdomains I created. I'd love to start with a fresh slate...

There’s no such thing as talking you out of getting something as meaningful as a fresh domain. Got more than I really need myself and no regrets. It’s all about flexibility and security of communication, not one domains carries any www info. Curious to see what you will do with it, might be an option or simply more than I need. Go for it!! 🥳🥰
