I'm still thinking about setting up a selfhosted #Matrix Server, but I'm not sure about which software to use.

Available hardware: Synology DS920+ with plenty of RAM.

Top of my current list is #conduwuit, close second is #synapse .

I read that Synapse can be very hungry on resources, even for single-user servers. Is that still a problem?

conduwuit is discontinued.

Synapse is the right software. If you do not federate with other matrix servers, it will be OK for this Synology model. Federation and large rooms are eating the most of the resources.

@ludman1 Thanks for your input.

Just to make sure that I get this right: if I subscribe to a room or space on a different server, that's federation, correct? Same as e.g. ActivityPub between instances.

For example I do not federate my self hosted matrix. It is closed env. And used by me, my friends, family and relatives. It is synapse based and even can be hosted on Raspberry pi

@ludman1 I just installed Synapse on the DS920, seems to be running just fine at the moment.

Thanks again.
