People who listen to audio books - please help!

What do you do with your eyes/hands when listening?

I'm trying my first audiobook and finding the experience very odd. If I try to read something, I can't concentrate on the audio, if I close my eyes I drift off to sleep, if I play a game it is too distracting.

About to take a 9 hour flight so need a strategy!

I'll see if the cabin crew will let me break out my dustbuster 😁

@Terence Eden I usually listen to audiobooks in the office, while doing repetitive and/or booooooring work.

Or in the car, but only when I'm driving on routes that I already know. So not in "new" cities.

My only time really doing it is when I am doing other things like driving, going on a walk, et cetera. It's basically a swap out for listening to podcasts/talk radio.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up doing a lot of Sudoku and watching the flight map while listening

Not entirely sure audiobooks are right for me, but a fun experiment.

I got His Dark Materials read by Philip Pullman himself accompanied by a voice cast from a charity shop. It's nearly 14 hours long. I tend to listen in the car on long-ish journeys, but that took weeks. The BBC productions of Pratchett, Douglas Adams and Gaiman are as excellent as @neil suggest. I'm still hunting/saving for the LoTR production with Ian Holm as Frodo

@neil I've got a big collection of (mostly) BBC radio plays that I've accumulated over the years of recording them, and, while there's a lot of variability in quality, there's a lot of absolutely brilliant ones. Mostly, I listen to them while cooking, and I did a lot while commuting in the car a few years back.
