If you post a link on Bluesky, it is now automatically redirected via the domain go.bsky.app before it actually goes to the link in the post. There is no way to stop this or know that it is happening as the redirect only flickers on the screen for a fraction of a second.

Presumably this means Bluesky can now track all link clicking on their platform, including IP addresses, destinations etc?

Or have I misunderstood?

Bluesky is spinning it as a tool for publishers to track referrals, but going beyond the spin it seems to be giving Bluesky access to people's online activity?

From all the people who tell me "Fediverse is dead, go to Bluesky", noone seems to care about Federation or interoperability

All they care is "the big accounts" are there and thousands of likes and comments

If they are doing that then you are correct. But remember that this is how Twitter does it too.

Yes, that's my point, if this is correct BlueSky seems to be doing the same bad stuff that Twitter does.

p.s. Does anyone know how BlueSky is able to avoid showing the go.bsky.app address when you hover over the link in a browser? Seems a bit dangerous to be able to hide it in a browser?

Yes. So, we have Referer which is a header. If you click on an external link and that site populates it with a Referer header bluesky's webserver would be able to see that you came from X place. They may have logic to where if you came from somewhere else it then redirects you through go.bsky.app

you set the href to the correct url, but also an onclick listener that does the navigation to wherever you want via js and then return false
