Things seem pretty cool here on this "fediverse". What does that mean though, the "fediverse"? I hear it's using ActivityPub. Could anyone explain to me what that means? Thanks!
This is a running gag on the fediverse, originally created at a time where I got tired of people explaining activitypub to me, which happens, especially at conferences, more than one might think.
However, the post doesn't give that context, and I'm asking people to explain AP to me. A lot of people give it an earnest try! I actually really appreciate that, and if you're one of those people, that's great. (cotd ...)
There's a big difference between explaining something unprompted, assuming they don't know, and explaining something because someone asked. The humor here is comes from many people are excited to explain and don't check my profile. I don't think negatively for someone giving a sincere reply to a request, many are nice!
Meanwhile, here it's meant to be more performance art, especially to reflect what it's like when I *don't* ask and get told. Thanks for participating!
The Fediverse is the place where the semiannual Lemmer-Webber Troll is observed -- a celebration of the spectrum of over-enthusiastic and often ill-advised helpfulness available throughout our many communities.
An activity pub is a pub with fun activities like board games and craft projects. There's an activity pub instance near me that has an adult coloring book night. It sounds wholesome, but they can get quite rowdy!

A logistical marvel of engineering designed for the sole purpose of distributing cat pictures at scale using everyday things you have lying around the house, like a NetBSD toaster. Moderation here means being careful not to overheat the toaster you are using to serve the cat pictures.
Sure thing Christine, I'd be happy to explain it to you!
Imagine if Mark Facebook decided to let someone else run a part of his website, as an experiment. Wild, right? Well, that's exactly what happened! Back in late 2022, Mastadon was invented by the Fedified project, run by Eugen Gargron in Holland, and this Mastadon website allows you, me or anyone to post to our Facebook walls from other websites. Activitypub can be thought of as the glue that connects Facebook to mastadon.social.
"But how does it work" you might ask, and that'd be a good question! It accomplishes this feat by installing a special browser toolbar which monitors your posts on other websites for the "Toot" keyword. When a "toot" is detected, it's copied to Facebook automatically, which is why you so often see posts ending in "Send toot."
@mav in the slot just like regular currency! Except of course there isn't an operator to come to your computer and retrieve the coins, so instead the slot accepts a special sort of much smaller credit card called Secure Digital.

It's 100% fine, sorry about this! It's fine to let people know about where to find advice, please do keep doing so 👍
Basically, this particular thread is a running gag. When Mastodon first started getting massive numbers of people joining, some new people were "mansplaining" in great detail to Ms Lemmer-Webber about how the site worked and telling her she didn't understand it. I think with this thread she's trying to tempt someone to do this again 😁
@FediTips Thank you for the info, but for those who want to help and who are not mainsplaining, it's a trap because speaking for me not being in IT, I didn't know that... 😕
First, to answer your question, the "Fediverse" is what we call the broader network of Social Media servers which use the ActivityPub protocol to communicate and share posts with each other: basically, the Fediverse is the network, while Mastodon is just a software. Other servers might use software like Misskey or WordPress to make and display posts, which is why we don't just call it the "Mastodon" network.
Now, some advice to get you started on here...
There is no algorithm here, so we generate our feeds by following people and hashtags. I recommend you search up a few hashtags and follow them now to get started.
I also recommend you make a post talking about yourself, using the hashtag #introduction, and adding further hashtags for the things you intend to post about. That way, you can find some followers right away.
If you have any questions or need any help, feel free to ask! 🙂
@jami In my defense, I wouldn't call it "Mansplaining" when it's a woman in software responding to another woman in software's seemingly genuine question about a software she works with.
I think we overuse that term: "Mansplaining", to me, is typically when a man assumes a woman doesn't know things, because she's a woman, and explains, poorly, the thing.
Either way, I didn't see who it was and treated her as a new user: I think it's important that the first "I am new and what is this?" gets a welcoming and informative response.
@Raccoon @jami Christine has been setting these up for a while now... they're getting pretty old though. Not sure what the fun is in trolling people who genuinely want to help.

"Fediverse" is just a nerdy word that only nerdy people understand just like "Gopher" or "Usenet" used to be back in the day. "ActivityPub" is another nerdy word only nerds understand like "TCP/IP" or "IMAP"
We are still waiting for our "AOL" or "Google" to come and make this thing simple, useful and enjoyable for the usual non-nerdy mortals.
And we really, really want the usual mortals to come.
But when/if they do, we will hate them, chastise them for not knowing enough about federation and maybe even call this day an "Eternal September part II"
...a reference they won't understand, but we will know it's a devastating insult...
@eblu ActivityPub allows for easier Reply All functionality. No longer must one choose the Reply All button. Instead, you must choose NOT to Reply All if you don't want to for some strange reason.
@MichaelBishop @Gorfram @alyx Yes, John Mastodon is the name on the 2009 ActivityPub whitepaper. But noone has ever been able to say for certain who that person really is.
fediverse is coined using words "federated"+"universe", it refers to the nature of the network connected using ActivityPub protocol: servers (instances) are interconnected, and one user hosted on one server can reach a user hosted on another server (federated), because the former server will delivers the message to the latter server.
And there's not only Mastodon, too. For example, I'm on a Misskey instance, which is a suite of microblogging software developed independently from Mastodon. You can also subscribe to blogs (writefreely and wordpress with ActivityPub plugin installed), videos (peertube), photo-sharing accounts (pixelfed, which is similar to instagram) or even reddit-like forums (lemmy) as long as it supports ActivityPub.
@OctaviaConAmore @Orca (I know this thread is just for fun but I'm worried that somebody will publish an article based on this and it'll be even worse than the John Mastodon thing.)
In September 2023, I started work on a book about ActivityPub for O’Reilly Media. The book is now available! O’Reilly Learning Platform Amazon Apple Books ebooks.com Kobo Upcoming event…
ActivityPub is a protocol used to build a federated social network that's known as the "Fediverse". In layman's terms, instead of posts being carried by the relative motion of conductors and fluxes, it is produced by the modial interaction of magneto-reluctance and capacitive diractance.
The original fediverse had a base plate of pre-famulated amulite surmounted by a malleable logarithmic casing in such a way that the two spurving bearings were in a direct line with the panametric fan. The latter consisted simply of six hydrocoptic mastodons, so fitted to the ambifacient lunar waneshaft that side fumbling was effectively prevented.
The fediverse has now reached a high level of development, and it’s being successfully used in the operation of novertrunnions. Moreover, whenever a forescent skor motion is required, it may also be employed in conjunction with a drawn reciprocation dingle arm, to reduce sinusoidal troll posts
Given how many people interpret it as "pub with activities" I will be sorely disappointed if there won't be at least one pub/cafe/etc called "ActivityPub" in a few years.
